A technical, epistemological (see below) view of failure investigations and analysis with a focus on metal alloys and polymers for professionals, college students and the experts who intersect with investigations. Attorneys, manufacturing engineers and quality engineers should be able to understand 90% of the content. Yet, long time practitioners of forensic engineering will likely build a few new skills. What the heck is epistemology?
Epistemology’s other name is Theory of Knowledge. It’s a sub-branch of philosophy. I like to say it’s about how we know what we say we know. Becoming skilled in epistemology lets us sound like we know what we are talking about. Good use of epistemology is the opposite of bamboozling! It’s good to avoid bamboozling, or sounding like you are trying to bamboozle someone, when you are doing professional level failure analysis.
